I wonder sometimes if Kitsis and Horowitz even realize they are presenting all these romantic tropes between these two characters. Based on the inanity of some of the dialogue, and the ways they handle other characters' development, they aren't very thoughtful of wider implications of things. So they may actually be that dense and not see what they are doing from any wider perspective. This thought depresses me. I always hate the idea of being more aware of things than someone who professes to be a professional at something.

Even if they were that dense back in season 1, fans have already let them know what they were doing. Now they are just playing dumb  |

Regina's heart will never be completely cold and black. She loves Henry beyond anything. Her heart's never has been completely black either. Even in the darkest throes of her reign as The Evil Queen, in her private moments she has always been aware and affected by what she was doing.
Personally, kudos to Lana for showing those slivers of light amid the worst forbidding black acts. One of my favorites is the conflicted face as she's protecting her curse by crushing the Huntsman's heart. She really had hoped never to traverse that darkest of paths again.
For Regina, coming to Storybrooke was, yes, revenge on Snow White but it was also, perhaps even moreso, obtaining a chance at a fresh start for herself. I expect we will see as much in the "Welcome to Storybrooke" episode. She is absolutely broken when she says, "Perhaps. But not here" in response to her father's plea that she try one last time to grasp at happiness, just before she takes his heart as the final act to engage the curse.
I really never can see Regina willingly returning to the Enchanted Forest, no matter what other characters may do or want to do.
