Oh I love me some magic baby fic. But not so much because of the baby, more their dealing with it./the bits leading up to the baby. I'm with you on the long lost kids thing though, those make me squirm.
Crazy for a good AU too. I love when they're made real world but their backgrounds/issues are still mostly the same just twisted to fit the situation, or AU FTL (I am madly in love with Enchanted. God it's good.)

I think the American vs British English is more of a characterization issue for me. It's not even that I won't understand what they are saying if they don't say it in American, but that I won't be able to "hear" the characters, like Exquisite said, so that'll put me off a bit. Wow, you guys really put a lot of work into the writing process! No wonder you come up with such good quality stuff! THIS! I understand the slang but when Emma or Regina use it in fic, it totally takes me out of the story. They wouldn't speak that way. When Regina is suddenly nicer than kittens. I love her to bits but she is not a nice woman. She is a snarky bitch, even on her road to redemption. Or when Emma is all "woman make me a sammich. Cuz I'm butch and therefore must talk like a dude", Emma is many things but not that. So yeah, it's basically Characterization things for me. Also G!P stories. And I hate when it's not disclosed in the summary, I don't want to read about Emma having a penis in my femslash. Or Regina but its usually Emma. Oh and 1st person perspective, for no reason other than I don't like it.

Yes, the "butch" thing bugs me too, especially the "I'm butch and therefore wear boyshorts" even though we specifically know Emma doesn't because of episode 2. That alone can totally throw me out of a scene.

I don't really care what kind of underwear they wear. If we get to that point in fic, it's usually not on for very long anyway But it does bug me when I'm reading something and then find out that it's G!P, or anything else that would need a warning or a note, and it wasn't disclosed in the summary. To me, the summary is as much a description of your fic so people will want to read it, as a place to let people know why they might NOT want to.

That alone can totally throw me out of a scene. I commonly write this, but this has nothing to do with 'butch' or 'femme'. I'm very femme and I love wearing boyshorts haha. I suppose it's just a preference, but it's good to know that some people automatically associate that as writing Emma as butch! Thanks for the insight

When it comes to fanfiction - or, just, fiction/film/everything - I can happily read almost anything that's written in a 'believable' way. Not believable as in realistic, but believable in the story world. If I can't imagine it happening there, then I'm not going to be able to read it without thinking 'eh, really? REALLY?'.
For example, a baby being sent through a magic tree closet to a far away land where the world she left behind is destined to be trapped until she turns twenty eight and can return to defeat an Evil Queen and save them all. Pretty freaking ridiculous - but it works on Once because (the cast is really attractive) it all fits in with the story they're telling. I guess characterisation is a big part of this, too, but I can read almost any situation depending on how well it's being portrayed.

Haha, because the cast is really attractive. Love it.
I do love writing Once stories because with magic and fairytales its limitless and yet still probable in that 'world'

^ Yeah, it reminds me of Harry Potter in that sense. And, well, magic. But yeah, if writing wasn't already limitless, Once is a treat. ahah
