I need some advice and didn't see a thread that would be the appropriate place to post. Specifically, I wonder what kind of music you listen to in order to feed your muse? I've been using iheart radio, but none of the playlists seem to be helping. So, writers and readers, what say you?

For me songs, are a really good way to get into a specific and emotional frame of mind which help with writing. There have been stories that I have no personal experience to draw from, but a certain song can reveal and heighten feelings to make things easier to convey.
Usually, I start with a story idea and the song kinda jumps in. I just finished Enchanted Phallus and I was listening to "Turn me on" by Nikki Minaj and "Youth Knows No Pain" by Lykke Li.
Sometimes I hear a song and get an idea for a fic. I had a prompt that I simply could not get inspired for and then I happened to listen to "Love and Anger" by Kate Bush and it was just the right tone, lyrics and mood I needed to get inspired.

Unless I'm already pretty inspired, I actually find music fairly distracting? I'm a compulsive sing-a-longer so I stop writing once those words get in my head.
I write to instrumental music instead, usually - Explosions in the Sky, Philip Glass, a fair amount of classical - Bach or Chopin mainly. Oh, and opera for really emotive stuff, so long as it's sung in a language I don't understand at all.

I also prefer instrumental when writing Skrillex? I lean toward instrumentals of show tunes, jazz or blues, selections dominated by brass, wind, or piano. I also enjoy a dollop of heart-thrumming djembe drumming from time to time.

It really depends for me. In fact, I usually prefer to write in complete silence. If I'm listening to music, unless the fic is inspired by it, then I'll usually have on something that I can just have in the background without my attention going to it.

It varies for me. There are days where I'm like Exquisit and there are certain songs that help inspire the mood/feelings. There are even songs that will inspire entire ideas. And then on the other hand, there are days where music is too distracting and I write in complete silence, like killer. Instrumental can help at times as well, depending on the song and what I'm writing. What I listen to or don't listen to varies from days to day. It changes constantly.
